Start a Business

Starting a Business in Oklahoma:

Welcome to the Norman Business Community!  Whether you are still in the planning stages or have already undertaken the initial steps of launching your business, the NEDC joins the City of Norman in assisting you as you embrace this exciting challenge.  The start-up process can be confusing but we are here to help by providing you with the resources you will need to be a successful business owner.

NEDC’s featured entrepreneurial resource is our business incubators, eTec and eTec².  These centers have been designed to assist technology entrepreneurs by offering flexible office space, from furnished single offices to suites, equipped with the latest telecommunications infrastructure, basic business services, and a training/conference room and computer laboratory.  For more information, call NEDC at 405.573.1900 after reviewing the eTec Business Accelerators.

Other entrepreneurial resources include direction on business licensing and registration, finding service providers, exploring finance and incentive options, and more.

Here are the basics that apply to almost all new business start-ups:

1. Determine your business name and business structure (See Business Structure Matrix): Business Structure Matrix

2. Determine if you need a Federal Identification Number.  For more information, click here.

3. Get a Federal Identification Number from the IRS at or call 800-829-4933.

4.Register your business with the appropriate state agencies.  Not every business requires a license or permit in Oklahoma, and not every business needs to register.  For assistance determining which applications, permits, licenses, or registrations are required, use the Oklahoma Department of Commerce’s Business Registration & Licensing System.

5. For information direct from the primary agencies of registration you may also want to visit:

The Secretary of State - This includes checking name availability and reserving your trade name
The Oklahoma Tax Commission - Download this Oklahoma Business Registration Packet.
Oklahoma Employment Security Commission- This applies only if you have employees.
