Space Imaging's Norman Ground Station started operations in 1992 as the first commercial ground station in the United States. Norman, Oklahoma was chosen for its central location that allowed coast-to-coast access to satellites. This coverage extends from about the middle of Canada to Central America.

The main function of Space Imaging's Norman Ground Station is to provide Tracking, Telemetry, and Commanding (TT&C), for various polar orbiting remote sensing spacecraft. Its current constellation includes Space Imaging's IKONOS, India's IRS, and the European Space Agency's ERS-2 satellites.

In addition to the TT&C functions, Norman is the main data processing center in North and South America for the Carterra 5-meter IRS data products. The IRS system provides systematic and repetitive acquisition of data from the earth's surface with 5-meter and 180-meter resolution.

Space Imaging has developed several product lines based on IRS data. These include individual scenes, digital ortho quads, custom mosaics, as well as a suite of off-the-shelf color 5-meter products providing extensive coterminous USA coverage.

Space Imagings Norman Ground Station has been called the worldwide focal point for collection of remote sensing data. It has been used as a model for other commercial stations that have since come online, bringing increased attention to the Norman, Oklahoma area. These new stations are a good sign that theres a growing market for remotely sensed data that makes new products available and spurs competition.
