Norman offers a variety of things without charge

NORMAN- I’m always amazed by the number of inexpensive-and even free- entertainment opportunities available in Norman.

What free activities? Well, just take a look at the MyNorman calendar on page 2 of this section, and you’ll see what I mean.

Today, for example, you’ll see a Home and Garden Show scheduled at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds. You can check out exhibits and booths, hear speakers and attend clinics on a variety of garden-and home-related topics-all for free.

If you are more into art and literature, check out the Second Sunday Poetry Reading at the Santa Fe Depot on Sunday and Art Adventures at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art on Tuesday. Both are free.

In addition to the free events listed in the calendar, Lisa Pergande of Lexington suggested stopping by the Norman Public Library, or the newly remodeled Noble Library, to enjoy the many free programs and activities offered by the Pioneer Library System.

“There is also Reaves Park and window shopping at the mall,” Pergande said. “You can also go to the duck pond to feed the ducks or have a picnic.”

Jennifer Garner of Noble also suggested enjoying nature.

“When it’s warm feed the ducks at the duck pond,” she said.

David Butts of Moore offered another suggestion for free fun in the Norman area, then changed his mind.

“Drive up or down Interstate 35,”he said. “No, wait. You pay for gas. Never mind.”

Norman resident Don Dycus said city government also offers its own form of entertainment.

“Attend city council meetings. They’re a laugh a minute,” Dycus said. “You can also watch them on the community access channel-if you pay for cable TV.”

In addition to those suggestions, Norman is home to many art galleries ad museums that charge a little or no admission.

The new downtown, city-owned parking off Gray Street makes it even easier to visit the downtown locations.
