MNTC moving forward with new building

Moore Norman Technology Center is going to the market and may return with proposals for a new building and facility signage as the Board of Education approved the solicitation of bids at its regular meeting last Thursday.

The board voted to move forward in process of acquiring a Construction Technology Building and interior signage at the Franklin Road Campus, 4701 12th Ave. NW, following a presentation on both projects. Officials from JHBR Architects presented plans on a more than 8,000 square foot facility that would contain a shop, computer room and a mezzanine level for storage. If constructed, the building would be occupied by the students assembling MNTC's roll-away house projects and placed near the site of the current roll-away house construction area.

"I'm completely pleased with how this turned out," said MNTC carpentry instructor Terry Williamson. He helped develop the plans for the building with JHBR and thinks it is suits the school's and program's needs. "It's everything you could want."

Williamson also assured the board that the potential construction would not affect existing programs.

Kevin Williams, of JHBR, revealed an estimated $1,183,295 price tag for the new building with substantial completion targeted for August 2007. The 315 construction scheduled could begin Sept. 25, if the board authorizes a contract at its Sept. 21, meeting. Project bids are due Aug. 29. MNTC Superintendent John Hunter was pleased with the preliminary efforts by Williamson and JHBR and said he looks forward to pressing on with the plan.

"This gives us the green light for the next step," he said following the vote.

While MNTC may have a new building on campus by next year, Hunter wanted to deal with the interior of the existing campus facilities. He sited the size of the campus as being a problem for new students and visitors and how appropriate signs could make navigating the halls easier.

Acrylic signs matching the markers hanging in MNTC's South Penn Campus were presented as the solution. The board was presented with a rough estimate of more than $61,000 to install the wall mounted information plaques.
