The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture Forestry Services has announced that Norman has been certified as a Tree City USA for the fourth consecutive year by the National Arbor Day 24 Day Foundation. Norman is among 24 Oklahoma communities being recognized nationally as demonstrating progressive urban forestry management.

The city and local volunteer organizations have made the Tree City USA award possible by creating a city Tree Board and a tree care ordinance, ordinance hiring a professional forester, planting tress across Norman as a part of the NeighborWoods program and planting a Centennial Grove.

Additionally, street tree inventories, an urban forestry master plan and a planting plan have received matching grants from State Forestry Services.

An annual Arbor Day observance is also a requirement to meet Tree City USA standards. The City again will partner with Little River Zoo for the annual Kids for Kindness Earth Day and Arbor Day event in Reaves Park.

The event will be noon to 6 p.m. April 23, and is free and open to the public. Fore more information, call Suzanne Terry at (405) 366-5472.
